The Miners' Story, in their own words...
Our first child, Benjamin, was born at 28 weeks gestational age, weighed 2 lbs 12 oz, and spent 70 long day sin the NICU at UMAss Memorial Hospital. Our time with Ben in the hospital was full of uncertainty as he struggled to breathe on his own. Ben overcame this and many other challenges and continues to display the same strength and determination he used to survive in the NICU.
Ben's mom, Cara, was working as an ob/gyn resident at UMass Memorial when Ben was born. After several weeks of bed rest, preterm labor progressed and Cara's water broke. Ben was born only a few hours later while Ben's dad, James, was on an airplane trying to get home from a business trip. It was a scary day for all of us. This experience has given Cara a unique perspective and empathy for the pregnant women she cares for today at Newton Wellesley Hospital. It is also worth mentioning that with the help of weekly intramuscular injections of progesterone, Cara had two successful full-term deliveries and Ben has two younger siblings, Emma and Jake. Treatments like the IM progesterone Cara received are in part made possible by research supported by March of Dimes.
We are truly blessed that Ben is such a smart, lively, and happy eight-year-old today. We credit his NICU team for his unbelievably good outcome. Ben has a wonderful, empathetic spirit that is contagious - we walk for the March of Dimes to give other babies the same chance in life that Ben has been given.
