Boston Top Family Team: Brody Boys

This is the first year Brody Boys are walking in March for Babies, and what a first year it has been. This family team has already raised over $12,000 which is very impressive! They are a dedicated group of friends and family and we are very happy to have them be a part of the March of Dimes Family.

Derek and Mason Brody

When Dana and I found out we were pregnant, we were absolutely ecstatic.  A few weeks later when we found out we were having twins, we just couldn’t believe our luck.  He and I were so thrilled to be expecting two little ones in the middle of December.  We knew there was a chance the babies would come a bit early, so we anticipated their earliest arrival around Thanksgiving.  At the beginning of October, at 30 weeks, I was unexpectedly admitted to the hospital and were told we would have to stay there on full bed rest until the boys came.  At that time, I was also given a steroid injection that would help the boys’ lungs develop faster in case of an early delivery.

After three weeks of daily testing, monitoring, and worrying, we had the babies via c-section at 33 weeks.  Our beautiful sons Derek and Mason were born on October 28th, 2011, seven weeks premature.  Derek weighed 3lbs 10oz and Mason weighed 2lbs 13oz.  Both boys needed assistance breathing and were rushed to the NICU.  There, they were hooked up to IVs, feeding tubes and had constant monitoring of their heart rates and oxygen levels.

Our time in the NICU was the most difficult in our lives with indescribable fears of what the future held for our children.  Each day we eagerly waited for their weight check to see if they gained those much needed grams. We watched as they were moved from the open-bed warmer to the incubator and finally to their bassinets.  We took hundreds of pictures of simple things like their first time in clothes, their first bath, and their first time taking milk by bottle instead of by feeding tube.

Because of the wonderful advancements in medicine, including the steroid injection that proved to be invaluable, as well as the incredible care of the nurses at the BIDMC NICU, our boys were brought home strong and healthy just a few days before their due date in December.  Now, Derek and Mason are growing stronger each day and doing remarkably well.  We appreciate each moment and celebrate every milestone that they reach – both big and small.

We truly believe that our boys’ journey was made easier because of the March of Dimes.  We are extremely grateful for their health and know that it is important to support the cause that helped them, and us, get to where we are today.  If we can continue to help raise awareness for prematurity then hopefully we can help make an impact on the lives of babies and families in our position in the future.  This will be our first year participating in the Boston March for Babies, and plan to make this an annual tradition.  We are looking forward to being joined on the walk by our family and friends who have been with us every step of the way.  They too realize what a phenomenal organization the March of Dimes is and all that his has done for Derek, Mason, and countless other babies around the country.
Happy Boys!
